Summary
of Class
This course provides an overview of Modern Japanese History from the late Meiji to early postwar periods. It will combine political, social, and cultural changes, and how modern Japanese history fits in the history of East-Asia and the World. We will see how Japan’s Meiji modernization project underwent a dramatic shift and became a colonial empire through the Sino- and Russo- Japanese Wars, in turn changing Japan and the international dynamic of East-Asia. We will explore the rapidly changing interwar society, the rise of new ideologies, and examine in detail Japan’s path to the Asia-Pacific War, as well as Japan’s post-war transformation.

Students who took Professor Klautau's course are encouraged to join, but knowledge of Japanese history is not a requirement to take Modern Japanese History 2. This is an introductory course and welcomes newcomers in Japanese history.
